- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoIncidencia del capital social estructural en el abstencionismo electoral: evidencia empírica para Colombia(Universidad de San Buenaventura, 2018) Delgado Cisneros, Alejandro; Ibarra Medina, Lina Marcela; Burbano Valencia, Enrique Javier; Valencia Rodríguez, MarinoIn 2014, abstention in Colombia was close to 60% in the Presidential elections, being one of the highest ones in the 90s. The propose of this article is to analyze the relationship between this phenomenon and social capital, measured with binary variables and continuous variables from the Political Culture Survey, which covered the presidential elections of 2014. Estimates with Logit models indicate that an increase of 1% in the Social Capital Index (an index created for this research) reduces the probability of abstaining by 0.53%. It is also evident that the effects are heterogeneous according to the political affiliation, being greater in individuals that are considered center and left. The results reveal the importance of strengthening social capital to increase electoral participation, especially in people with different political lines aside from the right.
