Evidencia empírica para Colombia(Universidad de San Buenaventura, 2019) Ordoñez López, Mauricio; Veloza Fandiño, Juan Esteban; Burbano Valencia, Enrique Javier; Rodríguez Valencia, MarinoThis research studies the effect of political sanctions (PS) over the results of mayoral elections for 2015 in Colombia. According to the above, an index was created from the main sanctions that were applied to mayors since 2012. The estimates by Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and the Heckman model show that at an 10% of increase in the PS variable, increases on average the margin of victory between 0.25 and 0.41% and the electoral turnout between 0.27 and 0.43%; nor is there a "punishment" effect (lower voting) on parties with previously sanctioned candidates and the effects of PS on the electoral results are heterogeneous according to the institutional characteristics of the municipalities linked to crime (private and political) and paramilitarism.
