- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoAnálisis de las condiciones institucionales para el desarrollo del nivel b1 en estudiantes de 11° de una institución educativa oficial de Cartagena(2018-06-07) Aldana Morales, Melissa Johana; Castillo Orozco, Karol Andrea; Rangel Duran, Luis Miguel; Pusey Rose, Farony; Velaides Orellano, Mileidys; Orozco Camacho, NidiaIn Colombia it is a requirement from the government that high school students must graduate with the level B1 according to the Common European Framework of references for languages. However, this situation does not match the reality according to the results of the previous years of the “Pruebas Saber 11” the test applied to prove their levels, on the contrary these results show that 11th grade students are graduating with A1 level. This article presents an analysis of the institutional conditions of public schools of Cartagena to help students of 11th grade develop the communicative competence in English to obtain the B1 level. Through a qualitative ethnographic methodology, it was possible to find out that the institutional conditions in a public school of Cartagena, Colombia are inappropriate for 11th grade students to develop the level B1. The Ministry of National Education lay out objectives and ignore the reality of the logistic conditions and teacher’s pedagogical practices. This article concluded that the effect of these actions brings more prejudice than benefits.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoEl Caribe nos une: análisis comparado de letras de canciones jamaiquinas y dos obras del Caribe colombiano(2017-10-10) Puerta Hernández, Karina Paola; Schmidt Sánchez, Priscilla; Lora Díaz, MarcelaWhen a language is taught, we must take into account all the skills for the purpose of reaching an integral learning of this one. But, in the case of the English language we found that for one side when it is taught, the intercultural competence is laid aside and there is more emphasis on other competences, on the other hand, the intercultural competence is taken into account but focusing on one country like is the case of the United States. It is for that reason that the purpose of this research is to show how through the comparative analysis between songs and literary works in English and Spanish in the light of thematology, we can see how our cultural contextiv (the Spanish –speaking Caribbean) gets closer to an anglophone cultural context, in the framework of the intercultural relation.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoComparative analysis of the main characters of the book Pride and Prejudice and its translation into Spanish Orgullo y Prejuicio(Universidad de San Buenaventura, 2022-01-03) Mendoza Miranda, Dayana Andrea; Corpas Florián, Cindy Fedra; Padilla Stand, Maria FernandaThe objective of this research is to determine what kind of translation phenomena happened in the main characters of the English novel Pride and Prejudice compared to its Spanish translation Orgullo y Prejuicio. This research was based on the content analysis method with a qualitative approach. First, to carry out the research we worked with the English novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, along with the translation of the book in Spanish, which both were read together in favour of identifying the translation differences between them. As a result, the researchers were able to find the factors where most of the translation differences were found between the English novel and its Spanish translation. The reading of the book, and its translation allowed us to determine that the majority of the translation differences were in the main characters, the vocabulary, and the setting. Consequently, the analysis of the translation differences that were found between Pride and Prejudice and Orgullo y Prejuicio allowed us to explain why these differences were generated when the English work was translated into Spanish. In the same way, the analysis illustrated why these differences were generated between the original version of the text and its translation. To conclude, this research allowed us to explain that if a translator wants to translate a literary English work into Spanish, then the translator must choose carefully which elements have the most influence on the work, and how they will adapt these elements into the target language of the translation.

- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoImpact of the curriculum and the micro-curriculum of the Modern Languages Program at the University of San Buenaventura in the oral production skills in FFL among fourth-semester and eighth-semester students(Universidad de San Buenaventura, 2022-03-01) Llamas Nieves, Daniel David; Orozco Marmolejo, Liliana Margarita; Rada González, Gina PaolaThe present study investigated the effect of the curriculum and French micro-curriculum among fourth-semester and eighth-semester students from the Modern Languages Program at the University of San Buenaventura. Eleven students answered a thirteen-question survey regarding their French development and issues. Consequently, three sessions of French-speaking classes were observed, where the professors selected five students from each semester to be study subjects of the research. Our analysis showed that most students consider that vocabulary is their main problem in French and their level does not meet the level required for their semester; students are not participating constantly in class; they are not practicing a lot of their French at home, which makes the foreign language acquisition process slower. We conclude that to improve participation and oral production in French, professors should concentrate on vocabulary with more ludic and dynamic activities to motivate the students to learn the foreign language and keep them engaged with the class.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoImproving vocabulary acquisition by means of listening activities(2019-02-07) Diaz Cordoba, Andres Sebastian; Caraballo Vasquez, Dayanara; Fernández, Heberto HugoThis thesis deals with the problem of vocabulary by means of listening. In particular, the question we are trying to answer is this: How can current teaching strategies can be enhanced to include listening skills thereby improving the vocabulary level in USB modern language students? The literature research process allowed us to explore a number of key terms and second language acquisition theories among which Stephen Krashen’s second language acquisition theory (SLA), and its five hypothesis, prove to be coherent to the theoretical framework the work of Paul Nation and Jonathan Newton, who follow Krashen’s ideas serve as a guide and from it we adapted a number of activities from Nation and Newton to improve listening and increase students’ vocabulary levels. These activities have been adapted to the Colombian context and, specifically the Modern Language Program at San Buenaventura University.
